New study in the Netherlands
PET OWNERS LIVE HEALTHIER LIFES!
The Dutch study reveals that pet owners feel happier than people without pets; this is seen as one of the reasons why pet owners resort far less to the services of psychologists or their general practitioner.
The latest study confirms previous research in other countries, which showed that pets have a positive influence on the mental and physical health of their owners. The benefits include also: lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, less medicinal drugs, fewer sick leaves and spending shorter time in hospitals. The results also show that the higher the level of attachment to the pet the lesser the need for medication.Public health expenditure, such studies have shown, is significantly reduced. Thus, keeping pet animals can reduce health expenditure which is an important finding in the times of increasing costs for public health.

NEW! - 2012 update of Nutritional Guidelines Cats and Dogs
13 July 2012
Nutritional requirements for cats and dogs are different to human requirements and between cats and dogs there are significant differences - a cat is not a "small dog"...
Since the 1980s, FEDIAF has been working on establishing levels of nutrients to satisfy the requirements of cats and dogs; these Guidelines are used by companies to formulate their recipes. Science evolves, new data is constantly available and several updates have been published over the years.
Also for the 2012 revision, FEDIAF collaborated with eminent scientists from academia forming the Scientific Advisory Board. The Scientific Advisory Board will continue advising on how further improvements can be done to ensure that the FEDIAF Guidelines are continuously updated and reflect the state of the art of science.
